Legislative Updates CDC Forced to End Ban on Evictions

Summary: Another federal judge ruled this week that the CDC lacked the authority to issue a nationwide moratorium on rental evictions. U.S. District Judge J. Philip Calabrese wrote in a 31-page order that the agency went beyond what the federal Public Health Service Act allows it to do. The ruling was hailed as a victory for landlords who have suffered financially during the pandemic.

Legislative Updates: Ohio HB93 moves to House floor

Lila Testifies to the House Committee in support of HB93

The bill prevents municipalities from attaching a lien on properties from services that were contracted for and used by tenants. It prevents property owners to be payers of last resort. It only makes sense to have utility bills paid for by those who use the services. Water, sewer, and trash services should not be treated differently than other utilities.

As a housing provider in this state, when I am hit with unexpected bills or liens on my property for services I didn't contract for or use, it makes it difficult for me to keep my rents reasonable and my deposits low. These extra charges must be socialized across other properties that are rented by good and paying tenants.

UPDATE: This bill has passed the Ohio House & is now in Committee in the Ohio Senate. Thanks for your testimony Lila!
